Following the introduction of new university degrees in the framework of the European Higher Education Area, the Degree in Catalan Philology was redesigned to become the Degree of Philology Catalan and Occitan Studies of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Lleida. Although the new course programme is similar to the previous Degree in Catalan Philology, one major change has been introduced. Namely, the curriculum was extended to include the study of Occitan language and literature, since Occitan is the second official language of Catalonia, in addition to being spoken in La Vall d’Aran. The new Degree in Philology Catalan and Occitan Studies gives students greater opportunities, since it leads to a wider range of possible future careers. Furthermore, students  will now be able to conduct research into Occitan, as well as into Catalan language and literature.

The training offered by the degree in Catalan Philology and Occitan Studies pursues several objectives. In the field of EXPRESSION, it enables students to express themselves correctly and competently in Catalan (and, to an intermediate degree, in a foreign language). Training in Occitan provides the tools to work on texts in this language and to achieve basic active competence, which facilitates further specialization; The breadth of the approach provided by the study of Occitan, alongside Catalan, is highly enriching in terms of linguistic and sociolinguistic analysis, as well as literary. In the field of TEACHING, the degree prepares students to develop the teaching of Catalan and its literature, while keeping in mind Occitan, which is also official in our territory. In RESEARCH, it provides training to be able to carry out postgraduate studies specific to the linguistic and literary disciplines, and to carry out future research projects. In the fields of LINGUISTIC PLANNING AND MEDIATION, it enables the student to work in language planning processes in the public and private sectors, based on the knowledge of the sociolinguistic dimension of the Catalan and Occitan languages, and also to carry out functions. of linguistic mediation in intercultural contexts. At the same time, in the field of LINGUISTIC ADVICE, it enables you to carry out advisory tasks regarding the Catalan and Occitan languages both in the public administration and in companies and private institutions. In the field of LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY HERITAGE MANAGEMENT, it provides training for the analysis and evaluation of the heritage of the Catalan language and literature, and provides a very good basis for working in the Occitan linguistic and literary heritage; it also enables it to manage this heritage while facing the challenges of digital technology. And in the EDITORIAL AND MEDIA SECTOR, it prepares students to take on the professional tasks linked to the world of publishing and the media, from proofreading and editing to both linguistic and literary advice.
